Mauchline, East Ayrshire

Mauchline is a town in East Ayrshire, Scotland. In the 2001 census it had a recorded population of 4105. It lies by the Glasgow and South Western Railway line, 8 miles (13 km) east-southeast of Kilmarnock and 11 miles (18 km) northeast of Ayr. It is situated on a gentle slope about 1 mile (2 km) from the River Ayr, which flows through the south of the parish of Mauchline.

Mauchline, small town and par. with ry. sta., Ayrshire - par., 8907 ac., pop. 2504; town, 9½ miles SE. of Kilmarnock, pop. 1616; P.O., T.O., 1 Bank. Mauchline has relics of a priory. It has long been noted as a market for cattle and horses, and it has extensive mfrs. of snuff-boxes, &c., in white-varnished or tartan-painted wood. Mauchline is intimately associated with the name of the poet Burns; it is the scene of his Holy Fair and Jolly Beggars.
